What's in OUR Get Home Kit

For the majority of disasters our plan is to Bug In. Therefore our kit is intended to help us Get Home in the case of an emergency. To help you decide what you may want to include in your bag I've laid it out below. My choices are based on my our 15+ years prepping and the items have evolved over the years as our circumstances have changed. The primary goal, for these kits, was to enable us to survive long enough to get home.

You'll want to start with a bag - currently we us a Matador bag, but we've used many others through the years. It should either have many pockets or you can use packing cubes to make it modular. It should also have backpack straps for easy carrying - remember you may be walking home with this.

In one of our packing cubes we include extra clothes. Depending on your situation you may need to account for a variety of sizes but in general we like to have a thermal shirt (long underwear), socks, t-shirt, thin/lightweight pants, stocking cap, and neck over.

We have a small First Aid Kit as well as common medications.

Inside the kit we have a smaller bag holding the essential tools. We like the Cabela's Catch All Gear Bag, but any small gear bag would work. Inside this we have a small lantern, thin cable with lock, pliers, screwdriver, magnifying glass, spork, extra batteries, knife sharpener, and a small fire-starting kit.

Besides the 'out of the package' bandages we also store a variety of gauze pads and folded gauze as well as stretchy wrap and surgical tape. With these items you can make a bandage of almost any size or shape.

We keep a backup charging kit for our phones and other electronics.

Most of the items in our Get Home Kit can be found in our Amazon Storefront.
